Opening Weekend Shines with Frogs First Family Dinner and a Reimagined Chancellor's Assembly & Convocation

New Traditions, Same Values

“We’re all shaped by what happens at TCU," said Chancellor Victor J. Boschini, Jr. in his speech Saturday evening at the Chancellor's Assembly & Convocation. "For 150 years, we’ve been creating amazing leaders, amazing students and people who go out and change the world. I’m sure you’ll be one of those people, too,” he told the incoming class.

TCU has long been a community driven by a sense of belonging. We put people first and care about others as we pursue our mission of leading on and developing future generations of ethical leaders. This is always exemplified by our First-Year Experience, from summer Frog Camps to move-in week to opening weekend. We create that sense of belonging, connection and family from day one.

For new students, that sense of inclusion was palpable Saturday night during three major events that kicked off the academic year: the Frogs First Family Dinner, Chancellor's Assembly & Convocation and Campus Commons Celebration (complete with fireworks!).

Frogs First Family Dinner

Held prior to the Chancellor's Assembly & Convocation in "The Carter," this dinner is a chance for first-years to interact with faculty and staff to officially begin their time as Horned Frogs. Many alumni have shared that connections made during the First-Year Experience ended up as lifelong friendships.

Chancellor's Assembly & Convocation

Our actual sesquicentennial year is 2023, but excitement for the milestone event begins building this fall.

This year, the Chancellor's Assembly & Convocation was a reimagined hybrid event combining traditional elements of past assemblies, like the ceremonial lighting of the flame of knowledge, with elements of fall convocation, like the chancellor's state of the university address and an official welcome to new members of the TCU community.

Nearly 3,000 gathered in Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena to welcome the incoming class and new faculty, pass the "light of knowledge," sing the fight song and alma mater and hear inspiring remarks from university leadership.

Party in the Commons

After the Chancellor's Assembly & Convocation, students gathered for refreshments, entertainment and fireworks in the Campus Commons. And with that, the 2022-23 academic year commenced.
