TCU Celebrates a 75-Year Legacy with the U.S. Fulbright Program

TCU is proud to celebrate a rich legacy with the U.S. Fulbright Program, which marks its 75th anniversary in 2021. More than 50 TCU students and 30 faculty members are Fulbright alumni—leaders in global scholarship who have gone on to be a force for the greater good.

The Class of 2021

In the 2020-2021 academic year, TCU received notification of four Fulbright awards.

Brooke Boisvert '21 will conduct research in Austria at the Medical University of Vienna.

Katie Kelton '21 will serve as an English Teaching Assistant in Spain.

Morgan Lindsey '21 will serve as an English Teaching Assistant in Thailand.

Emma Brilleslyper '20, whose Fulbright award was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, will serve as an English Teaching Assistant in Belgium.

Fulbright Frogs

As an English teaching assistant in Indonesia, Jared Lax taught students how to write personal letters.

As a Fulbrighter, Jared Lax traveled to Pontianak, the capital of Indonesia, where residents experience an average of 126 inches of rain per year.

During his time in Indonesia, Jared Lax visited a mosque for the first time to see the 12 p.m. Islamic call to prayer with his friend Deni.

During her time as a Fulbrighter in South Korea, Allana Wooley learned about the hanbock, the country's traditional clothing for celebrations.

Allana Wooley taught English to schoolchildren in South Korea in 2015 and 2016.

Lyndsey Seale was asked to take part in the King's Parade in her town in Thailand. She didn't realize that participation involved full makeup and a gorgeous, handmade traditional Thai costume!

Claire Duerson explored a Korean folk village with her host family.

Christina Durano Butler '10 hiked to the top of Mt. Apo, the highest peak in the Philippines, and enjoyed the striking view.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic prevented travel across Europe, Cooper Gould ’19 visited the Palacio Nacional da Pena (Pena Palace) in Sintra, Portugal with friends.

About the Fulbright Program

The Fulbright Program is a prestigious opportunity for students, scholars, artists, teachers, and professionals to participate in individually designed study/research projects or English teaching assistant programs around the world. Fulbright’s commitment to granting international educational and cultural exchange programs for passionate and accomplished individuals goes hand-in-hand with TCU’s mission to develop ethical leaders and responsible citizens in the global community.

A Window to the World

During their grants, Fulbrighters meet, work, live with and learn from people of the host country, sharing daily experiences. The Fulbright program facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction on an individual basis in the classroom, field, home, and in routine tasks, allowing the grantee to gain an appreciation of others’ viewpoints and beliefs, the way they do things, and the way they think. Through engagement in the community, the grantee interacts with their hosts on a one-to-one basis in an atmosphere of openness, academic integrity, and intellectual freedom, thereby promoting mutual understanding.
