Commemorating the first fully in-person return to campus since March 2020, TCU held a joyful Welcome Home Celebration Monday in the center of the Intellectual Commons.
Faculty and staff turned out in more than 1,500 purple “Welcome Home, Frogs” T-shirts. Revelers took turns posing in giant 3D letters spelling “H-O-M-E” and for a collaborative photo mosaic.
The mood was bright and sunny, as was the day. To help everyone handle the Texas heat, food trucks dispensed complimentary cool treats from Pokey O’s Cookies & Ice Cream and Kona Ice shaved ice. There was also plenty of free swag at booths from schools and colleges and student organizations.
Trampolines, a DJ, a bounce house and other lawn games set a playful stage around a short presentation by Chancellor Boschini, who greeted the crowd and announced the winners of several annual faculty and staff accolades. Boschini also recognized SGA, Staff Assembly, Faculty Senate and Graduate Senate representatives.
This year’s Michael R. Ferrari Award went to two winners: Rachel Anne Hopper, associate director of residence life, and Johnny Nhan, associate dean of graduate studies and professor of criminal justice. Rodney Baker of facilities won the Chancellor’s Staff Award. The new TCU Impact Award, created to honor a staff member’s contributions during COVID-19, was presented to director of emergency management Sean Taylor.
The event was a happy reminder that it really does take a community to raise a Horned Frog. And that you’re never too old to celebrate the first day of school.
